Field Shows 2024

The Hampton HS Marching Band is proud to present their 2024 production, "Eclipse: Love Across The Sky."  The show is inspired by the poem, "A letter to the Sun from the dark side of the Moon," by Ranata Suzuki.  Our story involves the sun and moon, symbolically representing two people who love each other very much.  These people begin the show together, are tragically separated in the middle, and then are blessed with one "bonus" moment (portrayed by the eclipse) to see each other again as the show nears its conclusion.  The sun and moon are also portrayed by a dance team soloist (the sun) and color guard soloist (the moon) throughout the show.  Finally, the sun and moon will literally take the field.  Our prop parents were hard at work all summer designing and building our huge sun and moon!  The show is built around four distinct movements:

Mvt. 1:  Sharing The Sky Together.  Music:  "Golden Hour" by J.V.K.E.  Our sun & moon begin the show together, but the famous Eleanor Rigby lyric, "all the lonely people," can be heard over the last moments of this movement, foreshadowing the separation to come.

Mvt. 2:  Madness of Separation.  Music:  "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles.  Our arrangement is built off the recent Cody Fry cover of this classic pop tune.  This movement is all about the madness of being separated.  We are in denial at this point.

Mvt. 3:  Ballad of Despair.  Music:  "Shallow" by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.  This movement is hauntingly beautiful.  The climax of this movement is meant to portray the "crying out" of heartache from realizing separation can be permanent.  The band makes a long wall separating the dance team (the sun) from the color guard (the moon).  But in our show, is separation permanent?

Mvt. 4:  Hope and Eclipse.  Music:  "Here Comes The Sun" by The Beatles.  Our version is based off the recent cover by Jacob Collier.  This music is happy, hopeful, and the lyrics point to a possible reunion.  Then, we segue into a mash-up of the most famous song from the musical, Dear Evan Hansen, "You Will Be Found," and a powerful number from the musical, Hamilton, "The Story Of Tonight."  Arranged and composed by Lin Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt, "Found/Tonight" brings our show to an emotional and celebratory conclusion as our sun and moon meet again and form an eclipse.

Portions of this poem are used throughout our show:

TTo my dearest love….
…. my brilliant Sun,
The world has decided….
…. we can no longer be one
So you take the day….
…. and I’ll take the night
You with your happy glow….
…. me with my cold & lonely light
It must be this way….
…. always and forever
They say we can no longer …..
…. share the sky together
But my nights will follow….
…. your brilliant days
I am right behind you ….
…. and I will love you always
So do not be sad my love….
…. please do not fret
For my reason to rise….
…. is in watching you set
So never forget….
…. that there once was a time
When I truly was yours….
….and you truly were mine
That there once was a moment….
…. when I felt you lips
If ever you miss me….
…. remember our eclipse
